Yet the world your characters live in should contribute significantly to your tale, or why set it in the past at all? Certainly, plot and characters are the heart of any novel. It was enthralling and inspiring! And it drove home the point that details make all the difference when recreating history. For two days we had to wear Tudor-style clothing and use Tudor English (as much as possible!) and cook in period ovens with period equipment. How silly was that?Ī few months before moving back stateside, my children, Tom and Anne Elisabeth, and I took part in a historical-recreation field trip at Kentwell Hall, which was built during the reign of Henry VIII. Yet I labored on a novel set in 1920’s Wisconsin and published two contemporary books. When I began seriously writing fiction back in the Dark Ages of 1991, I lived in England, where I could visit ruinous castles, tour war museums, and tread the very ground on which the Battle of Hastings was fought. (Sadly, we also have access to much misinformation, so be sure to double- and triple-check your facts!) Writing books set during these fascinating time periods is more difficult for us modern authors, and yet through the Internet we have almost limitless historical information right at our fingertips. They lived in England, respectively during the Regency and Victorian periods, so they had no need to research such things as the hats they wore or the food they ate. Yet these authors really wrote contemporary novels. I do! And we are not alone in our passion for the past: Jane Austen’s novels are perennial favorites worldwide, and Elizabeth Gaskell’s have recently regained fame. I assume you must love history and historical novels, since you’re reading this article.
